About MeI grew up in Riverside, CA, and spent my early years travelling around the country with my family. The experience of visiting so many states by the time I finished Elementary School gave me quite an interesting perspective on life, and the world around me, from a fairly young age.
In Fifth grade, I became fascinated with the world of history and music. I spent every spare hour reading books about events from the past, and attempted to draw connections between the lives of the people in those stories, and my own. Music became my main passion though, and I expressed that through playing the trombone. |
Throughout my educational career, I played in wind ensembles, jazz bands, and was obsessed with marching band once I became part of the Dynasty Marching Band and Colorguard at Ramona High School. I performed in countless field competitions, parades, and took part in commercials and television shows on multiple occasions. I even had the opportunity to take my love of music outside the country by marching in New Year's Day parades in France, Italy, and England. Music was so important to me that I became a marching band instructor after high school, and chose to pursue it as a career.
My first year of college was tumultuous though, and I soon realized that even with it being a vital part of my past, music was not the career path which was best suited for me. I spent some time soul-searching and rediscovered my passion for history, to which I soon decided to major in. I continued with music in various teaching and performing capacities, until I was given the chance to march the Rose Parade in 2012 with the Riverside Community College Marching Tigers. Once I finished that parade, however, I had the overwhelming feeling that I had reached a capstone in my marching career, and quietly exited the musical world, save for a few occasional events.
Afterwards, I traveled to Europe without a musical group for the first time and had many wonderful experiences in Ireland. I spent a couple more years finishing my degree and eventually graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in History from California State University, San Bernardino in March, 2014. In my final year of undergraduate studies, I served as Chief Editor of the university's historical journal, History in the Making, and led the department to a First Place in a national competition, something which had never been done before at CSUSB. I then continued with my desire to teach by entering the teacher credentialing program at CSUSB and obtaining my Single Subject Credential in Social Science in March, 2016. Just recently, I also finished my Master of Science in Education with a Specialization in Teaching from California Baptist University in May, 2018.
I have been all around Southern California as a Coach, Tutor, Editor, and Substitute Teacher, particularly in the Inland Empire. I have taught classes at La Sierra and Norte Vista High Schools in the Alvord Unified School District, and Bloomington High School in the Colton-Joint Unified School District.
You might still be wondering though: "Why history?" Well, history is about studying the human experience, and in learning about the world through the perspectives of other cultures. With the amount of traveling I had done, from even a young age, I had access to so many differing viewpoints on life, and exploring those were an intriguing endeavor for me. I had many professors in college who mentored me and truly helped me to become a superb writer and historian, and who opened my eyes to the countless wonders present in our past. Reading for those stories, dissecting what is true and what is not, and understanding the broad themes present in history allows us to see where humanity has been, and predict where it might be going.
Teaching others to discover this wondrous world is a rewarding experience, and it is my goal to help students critically think about history and life, and then to relate that information to modern topics. Education is the strongest weapon in our arsenal, and I desire to teach others how to wield it decisively.
I am really looking forward to what this year has in store, and I will conclude by saying that as fascinating as the past is, the future is just as appealing.
